Distinguished and Famous people from Benalla
Benalla's schools, businesses and community organisations formed early chapters in lives that later reached national and international audiences. These people were connected with the town through substantial periods of education, work or upbringing.
🤝 Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop
Before his career as a surgeon, Edward Dunlop attended Benalla High School and began a pharmacy apprenticeship in the town. His family moved into Benalla in 1922 after farming near Stewarton. Medical study took him to Melbourne, and wartime service eventually made him a prisoner of the Japanese. On the Burma–Thailand railway he worked to save sick and malnourished captives, recording his experiences in diaries. His subsequent work for former prisoners continued long after his own return to Australia.
⚓ Hector Waller
Born in Benalla in 1900, Hector Waller was educated at the Higher Elementary School before entering the Royal Australian Naval College. He became an accomplished signals officer, then a commander whose Mediterranean service earned major decorations. His ships included the destroyer HMAS Stuart and the cruiser HMAS Perth. He died when Perth was sunk in March 1942. The town connection belongs to his birth and upbringing, preceding a professional life spent largely at sea and in naval establishments.
🤝 Michael Joseph Savage
Michael Joseph Savage spent formative working years in Benalla, employed in a wine and spirits shop while also taking night classes. He was active in boxing and weightlifting and became the fire brigade's secretary in 1892. Born at nearby Tatong, he later moved through labouring and union work before settling in New Zealand. As prime minister from 1935 to 1940, he became associated with the development of its welfare system. His early civic responsibilities were considerably closer to home.
